Before any of these officials resign, and beyond just saying they regret their actions, I hope they can explain maybe why they did it or what the context was, what they were trying to portray, etc.

Although I realize that might make things worse for them and possibly inflame the situation. But it helps to know more about these things, why people did what they did, what they were thinking, whether they knew in some way they were behaving badly even if it was accepted.
