I don’t know about that. This entire situation is going to provide psychologists and sociologists with decades of case study material. One thing I didn’t really appresciate fully before was the extreme degrees to which members of a group will conflate the short term desperate expedient needs of that group with their own long term self interest, even when common sense and prior examples should inform them otherwise.

In other words once you start digging a hole it becomes harder and harder to stop, especially when everyone around you is digging too.
