I’ve been saying for a while that Trump is bound to implode. The two best chances of that happening are tonight’s speech and at the debates (probably the first one). I keep trying to figure out what that implosion would be - I could easily see him saying something like “look here, little lady” at the debate and it completely ending his chances, but I’m less sure about the convention speech. Then again, him just giving one of his regular speeches might be enough to get whatever undecideds or soft Trump supporters there are to run away…

Unfortunately I don’t think there is anything that will actually be bad enough to count as an ‘implosion’. The national consciousness is too poisoned, and the media too vested in the celebrity of Trump. Quite literally, the rules don’t apply to him. Any other political figure would be ruined by any one of his gaffes. Insulting the military? Denigrating America and kissing up to dictators? Complete and demonstrable lack of any knowledge of how government works? Pretending to be your own publicist? Mocking a disabled person on live television?

If any other political figure were to do even one of these, their career would be over. If, God forbid, it were Hillary, she would literally have to fear for her life. But all of them are summarily ignored, because it’s Trump, because the next entertaining dumpster fire is only hours away, and because the rules simply don’t apply to him.

Americans are looking for any excuse, any at all, to not vote for Hillary. Conversely, there are innumerable valid reasons to not vote Trump, and still, Americans insist on excusing every revolting thing he does. I fear we are entering a very, very dark age.
