Because we’ve become lazy and complacent. One big example of this is our crumbling infrastructure. We built all this great shit and then spent barely any money on upkeep because taxes are evil. Ask people if they want safe infrastructure and of course they say yes, but then don’t want “taxpayer dollars” funding those upgrades. Because we are spoiled and uninformed. So shit falls apart. We literally have to be smacked with pieces of falling concrete before it occurs to people that something has to be done.

Throw in just barely getting by after working and commuting and people become numb and it has to be in their faces or they won’t see it.
