Sure, he was. He shares a major feature of many pols in his party. If they think they can harness something they see in their supporters to win elections or sway public opinion in their favor, they’ll do it even if they know it’s immoral/unethical and based on lies. When the birther movement began, they knew the president was born in Hawaii, but none of them had the integrity to admit it to the birthers. I remember McConnell, Boehner, and others going on national TV and refusing to denounce birtherism.
