The old John Birch Society was opposed to everything Russian. But now it has adapted to the age of Trump and has been transformed as surely as the Republican Party.

The tell of the John Birch society and its successors is that initially they paired Communism with tyranny and massive-scale state violence…the latter condemning the former, but the former guaranteeing the latter…but when tyranny and mass-scale violence were deployed independent of “Communism” they found reasons to excuse it. Including excusing the behavior of post-Communist Russia as it did much the same shit that made the USSR awful (though on a smaller scale, diminished as it was by the breakup of the republic).

What was the core of their opposition, then?
