I don’t know. VCRs used to be totally different formats between Britain and the U.S., but I don’t know if DVDs are the same.

The TV video standards are different. That was the difference in the VCR tape. Standard definition TV in the US uses NTSC and GB (and most of Europe) uses PAL (Except France which uses a weird flavor of PAL, PAL-M IIRC). This has been addressed with the move to HDTV. For anyone involved in any sort of engineering that touched on video it has always been a bit of a headache.
