since the end of WW 2 through the end of the cold war the entire region was “up for grabs” when it came to which “side” a nation would be on. Having a US freindly gov’t in Iran (considering where it sits geographically) gave us a close listening post to the USSR

Again, we’re talikg from the mid 40’s on. The technology to “listen” wasn’t what it is now. You needed proximity back then
