The first comics I ever owned or read, and this is a quirk of being the right age were:

Watchmen,
V is for Vendetta
Dark Knight Returns

Then in college, it was Sandman, Bone, the Maxx and Strangers in Paradise.

Right now, I highly recommend any of the Dark Horse Star Wars series.
