It seems that way from today’s perspective… but the US in the early 1900’s didn’t consider Italians or Greeks or Jews or eastern Europeans “white”.

And no matter how much they whine now about the country becoming “minority white” in our lifetime, it won’t happen. Currently, there’s census categories called “non-Hispanic white”, “non-Hispanic black”, and Hispanic — but 30 years from now the majority will have decided that Spanish-speaking white people are just as white as English-speaking white people, Spanish-speaking black people are just as black as English-speaking black people, and mestizos will be their own check-the-box category.

I remember reading something a few years ago that the problem “whites” are having with Hispanics is that they refuse to play this game and become “white”. They’re not joining up in large numbers to hate blacks. They’re not deciding that a few wealthy white people is the best way to run the country.
