When I was at Ft. Benning I convinced three other guys (one of whom had a little pick up truck) to do a road trip back in 1982. We took in Andersonville and Plains GA.
Plains was a very small town with an enormous grain elevator filled with peanuts. I recall that and dirt roads.
Andersonville was far more interesting.
About 16 years ago I did some research about a Jewish soldier who died there. I located his grave in a Philadelphia cemetery but National Park Service insisted that he was still buried at Andersonville. The Civil War equivalent of ZAKA came and recovered the remains for re-interment in a Jewish cemetery.
