Ooh, I just got a call telling me my Social Security number will be CANCELLED because of FRAUDULENT ACTIVITY, and if I don’t call back at once, there will be LEGAL CONSEQUENCES.

Well, when you get over your terror, you might want to try to report the caller (and the number) to the SSA’s Fraud department
.
I will emphasize the word “try”, as this happened to me a few months back, and when I went to the SSA site (never mind calling: their phone tree is Giant Coast Redwood level) I found they had few options to report these kind of phone scams: most of their automated online options appear to be geared towards benefits denial, or other types of “fraud”.

I ended up simply sending them an email: but I later found out I might as well have saved myself the effort: these “SSA” Calls are all highly robotized, and use ever-changing lists of robo (or spoofed) numbers, and (as I read, later, elsewhere) virtually impossible to shut down.
