My point isn’t to criticize Mello’s record on abortion rights, my point is to defend Tim Kaine’s record and I will point out that Kaine actually did face a lot of scrunity when he was picked but people did see that Kaine had a 100% pro-choice voting record. The objections the activists had with Mello was not his personal beliefs but parts of his voting record. And personally, I think a lot are frustrated by the fact that Sanders who backed him can devise standards for candidates but they’re told to shut up about their concerns regarding this guy’s record on choice. I know Mello would have been better than the Republican who ran in Omaha. I don’t doubt that in the slightest.

Sanders backed him. His own party abandoned him.

Building a party presence takes time. Getting a more liberal message out will take time. But the party has to start somewhere. Mello might have been that start, but instead Omaha will continue reverting its downtown streets to gravel roads because taxes are theft at the point of a gun (and if you want your street paved you have to pay for it yourself).

Thanks to Mayor Stothert, Omaha is the largest city in the nation with gravel downtown streets. Real good for attracting business.

North Omaha is represented by Ernie Chambers (I-atheist) in the state legislature.

Is Mello ideal? No. No candidate is. But he was a mile away better than Stothert. I’m guessing Stothert will be in the state legislature soon. Don’t know about Heath Mello. I’m sure the GOP can come up with an even bigger wingnut than Mayor Stothert for the next mayor’s election.
