“Would have”? Gohmert’s ideological ancestors did exactly that, screaming that those fleeing from Europe were just looking to move here because their home countries were generally economic basketcases in the lead-up to WWII. They refused to believe that the oppression against Jews was so horrible that so many people would want to flee.
