I can only hope your pessimism is not borne out. Obviously a lot of the motivations are complex, but people do occasionally change and vote in their own self interest now and then.

They will not.

Trump’s voting base will only increase, not decrease. His popularity among the evil degenerates who voted for him is upwards of 90%, and will not drop. The 62 million Trump voters of 2016 are the floor, not the ceiling - there will be many, many more. This is because there is only one core value that Trump voters hold dear, which is to hate the right people. That’s the religion of American evangelicals, and the only remaining value of American conservatism. It doesn’t matter if they themselves lose their jobs, lose money, or even their own life and limb - the only thing, the only thing that matters, is whether or not they can indulge their hate, and whether their leaders hate the right people. That is what FOX and right wing media have done to this nation. That is their legacy.

I believe that 2020 will be a Trump landslide win. His voting base will only increase. There will be 4 years of constant normalisation of dictatorship by CNN and MSNBC and the rest of the American media, who want to see a Trump regime because it increases their ratings. There may well be another small war or so, which will increase popularity and make the media swoon more. But, most importantly, nothing will ever make someone who was willing to pull the lever for Donald fucking Trump of all people change their mind. Once you’re that far gone, what could possibly change your mind?
