I’m sorry, but police cars have headlights, spotlights and tested full color vision is considered an important requirement for service. I’m not buying this explanation.

Try to distinguish car colors next time you are out driving at night or day. It’s not so easy to distinquish similar colors/hues of neutral tones. Teal or Orange is easier in the day, but a Black, gray, beige even red can be very difficult, especially at night.
