Right, it was always an oddity. I guess name recognition, Dems active at local and state gov levels helped obtain the national seats for a period but the GOP has caught up there.

Can’t underestimate that there are probably some non political factors that helped guys like Daschle in office a long time too. I bet Daschle was great at constituent service. I’ve never lived in a rural or sparsely populated area but I imagine that good constituent service goes a long way there. Plus in those days, the farmers yeah they were conservative but I think more big picture than now. I don’t know though.
