There is a lot of cross-dressing in Shakespeare plays, which was probably because teenage boys played all the female roles.

It’s still hard for me to imagine a teenage boy playing Lady Macbeth but then again, most Peter Pans have been played by middle-aged women (Mary Martin, Cathy Rigby)

That’s right. I had forgotten that bit about Peter Pan. But yeah it was amusing to think about characters like Lady Macbeth, Juliet, etc all being played by guys when I read some of the plays for the Shakespeare class I took as an English minor.
