Bill Maher compares Romney campaign to last days of Nazi Germany

Comedian Bill Maher Wednesday compared election night at the Romney campaign to the final days in Nazi Germany.

Appearing on MSNBC’s “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” Maher offered what he thought Mitt Romney aides were saying to the candidate as they learned the election results.

“I think they were still saying ‘yes Mein Fuhrer, you still have twelve divisions on the eastern front’ — I mean, until they actually heard the artillery,” he said, likening the Romney campaign’s last moments to Nazi leadership’s belief they could win until they had already been defeated.

“I guess I should stop with the Hitler analogies,” Maher, who is of Jewish heritage, continued.

“I think Hitler never works myself,” Matthews added.

Earlier in the interview Maher made another Nazi reference when asked if Republican strategist and Fox News contributor Karl Rove is the last person to “admit if something new is happening.”

“It was a little Hitler’s bunker, wasn’t it? I really wanted to rush in with a cyanide capsule there,” Maher said. Referring to the 2004 German film “Downfall,” Maher continued, “I thought he was gonna say ‘I do not want to live in a world without National Socialism’ — OK Mrs. Goebbels.”

“Downfall” has been the subject of many parodies, known as “Hitler Reacts,” that feature a scene in the bunker where Hitler is told that he was going to lose the war.

Nazis? Hitler? Hey Bill Maher, go FY.
