re: #450 KGxvi
I believe the statehood vote last year was called into question because of an organized boycott by those opposed to statehood. There was only 23% turnout and statehood got 97% of the vote.
The 2012 vote is a better indicator, but also flawed. Just under two million people voted on two issues. First 54% voted that PR should not maintain itโs territorial status. On the second question of statehood/free association/independence, 61% chose statehood, but about a half million ballots were left blank. Now, itโs safe to assume that most of those blank ballots were people who voted to stay a territory, but it did complicate things and led to the 2017 referendum.
Choosing not to vote is still a choice. Too bad, if a person was opposed to statehood for Puerto Rico and didnโt vote, well, thatโs their problem.
