Snakeload’s a good first round. You probably won’t kill the guy, but you will slow him down, startle him, and make it more likely that he’ll run, or that you can back up to keep him outside your decision range.

I’ve heard that suggestion, but favor maximum effect from every round (I’m a revolver fan). No warning, no wounding; if it comes to weapons, it’s already past the point.
