That’s right. I had forgotten that bit about Peter Pan. But yeah it was amusing to think about characters like Lady Macbeth, Juliet, etc all being played by guys when I read some of the plays for the Shakespeare class I took as an English minor.

The roles were played by men because the Church prevented women from working as actresses
