I’m so white I’d be lost in a snow storm - 92% Great Britain (includes Western Germany and northern France) and 7% Ireland/Scotland/Wales. This journey to find my ancestors has opened my eyes to conflicts related to pride in my exclusively Southern heritage. We are a people who deeply value extended family. Asking who your people are is as natural as breathing. It has served us well as a support function, but I think it has hurt us as we are willing to ‘other’ people too easily. The first time I read a will from one of my 2x great grandfathers, leaving human beings to his children as property, it felt like a punch in the gut and I cried.
