I think that what you’re leaving out is the context of the situation. In isolation, there IS no excuse to fire into that car. Unfortunately, there was a lot more to the case than a “hero” cop jumping onto the hood and blazing away. There are parallels with the MOVE case in Philadelphia thirty years ago this month. Back then police were trying to evict the occupants of the house. Somebody fired a shot (I don’t think it was ever established who fired first). Before it was over, the police department had to get more ammo from the surrounding townships. Long story short, no single officers were responsible. It was a failure of leadership and training, and I think this is the same. The cops had the suspects cornered, but panicked. I just don’t think this rises (or sinks) to the level of depravity like you see in many other recent cases. A lot of cops fucked this thing up, but trying to pin it on one isn’t going to work.
