Can’t underestimate that there are probably some non political factors that helped guys like Daschle in office a long time too. I bet Daschle was great at constituent service. I’ve never lived in a rural or sparsely populated area but I imagine that good constituent service goes a long way there. Plus in those days, the farmers yeah they were conservative but I think more big picture than now. I don’t know though.

Yeah, the nationalization of local and state politics has fed into the Senate races.

On the other hand, the Dem candidate for county executive here essentially nationalized his election and defeated the GOP incumbent (who was a pretty moderate guy in any event).
