I’ve known folks in 3 way relationships, not quite as messy as all that, but it never turns out well.

Three friends generally don’t work well together. Not a hard and fast rule, of course, but usually two of the three will bond and leave the third out, even if it isn’t sexual. Or one will get jealous of the other two. You see it with kids a lot.
