Obtusium isn’t like water: the liquid form is significantly less dense than the solid form. If it were as dense as the solid, the Dopefish couldn’t swim. The Obtusium is in its liver to keep it from dying from some of the toxic things the Dopefish sometimes eats. As result, when playing a RPG the Dopefish should be regarded as having the Toxic Immunity trait.

Water is actually unusual in that its solid form (ice I for the traditionalists, because there are actually like …a lot of different crystalline forms of ice and this does not necessarily apply to all of them) is less dense than its liquid form.

Normally things become more dense in the transition to the solid; that is why this transition can occur under pressure (the same happens going from a gas to a liquid, which is why the application of pressure can result in a gas becoming a liquid …or superheating, and then the release of pressure (like reaching the surface) flashing the liquid to steam and resulting in a geyser).

Science is awesome.
