It would seem we atheists care more about freedom of religion than right-wing Protestant politicians do.

I suppose the argument would be something along the lines of “the rosaries could be used as a weapon” or some such codswallop.

It probably wasn’t a great idea for the Roman Catholic Church to align itself with Paul Wyrich and his wingnut Protestant friends to get Ronald Reagan and conservative politicians elected.
