I should have mentioned that we know why they gave no advance notice, no hint that there was any problem with the mine’s finances, until they closed it just as they were filing for bankruptcy. The reason? Because if they’d served up advance notice, then productivity would have dropped off and they wanted to extract every last cent they could before they had to go bankruptcy court. If they told workers that the mine was going to be closed and start preparing, then workers would have called out, they would have protested, and they would have started looking for other jobs. Not to mention they would have tried to get every bit they could have out of 401Ks and health benefits before the tap was shut off. By holding off serving notice until it was a done deal, the company acted in a way that hasn’t been seen since the Guilded Age.

So their 401k’s are gone??
