In fact they might increase fire risk overall, because some people will have left equipment like clothes irons plugged in and unattended when they left after the power went out in the middle of doing chores.

Yeah, but it won’t be PG&E’s fault. See, they’re making us safe, even as they deeply, deeply regret any inconvenience. Making us choke on all that safety is way easier than spending money on infrastructure and clearing trees away from lines, and leaves the money available to give themselves bonuses.
