re: #42 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

Traveling around this big country, I believe the best grocery stores are the employee-owned types, the Woodman’s in Wisconsin, or even better, the Hy-Vee in Iowa and surrounding states.

Trader Joe’s has its moments but it insists are locating itself in tight spots, and their penchant for squeezing people at the end of the counter is just maddening.

I remember when Henry Boney had his old large market in downtown San Diego. Unfortunately in recent years Henry’s legacy has fallen prey to the vulture capitalists.

I’ve become a fan of Market Basket since moving to New England. Our move was just before some in the family of owners tried to sell it off and the workers—non-union—walked off the job to ensure that it stayed in the family under control of the cousin who was more devoted to the legacy. They finally settled. Their produce is often a little on the “pre-picked” side (IMO), so we go to Shaw’s for that. There’s a Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s about 10 miles away. I don’t feel the need to travel that far.
