Actually, the peak subscriber count was a tick over 12 million, and currently hovers at around 10 million. That is subscribed accounts; no telling how many of those are active players.

The 10 million number is a bit padded due to Blizzard/Activision going free-to-play for the first 20 levels, as well as people signing up for the 12-month commitment which included getting Diablo 3 for free. When August rolls around -when the 12 months subscription ends - I forsee a significant downtick. The new upcoming expansion is not garnering anywhere near the excitement that the prior ones did (mostly because Cataclysm simply was a huge step down from the prior releases).
