It depends on what you are looking for. David Drake is good for the miltary edge in Sci-Fi. He also deals more with the human factor and the science is just to drag the story along when needed. He also has a good knowledge of history and has reworked a few stories into his fiction. John Ringo is also a good military writer, Tom Kratmann (sp?), David Weber, and if you want to look at the silver age there’s Niven and Pournelle.

/off the top of my head, but I am sure there are a few more out there as well.
