I think you’re entitled to a nationality, and an empty symbolic act alone probably won’t make him no longer a U.S. citizen, but if he’s serious about it and gets a second citizenship, then I think the U.S. can declare his citizenship void.

Well, if has the balls he poses as having, all it takes to renounce your US citizenship is to state your solemn intention of doing so before any US consular officer in the world. You are instantly rid of your US citizenship. (Well, maybe you have to fill out a form.)

What citizenship you are “entitled” to after that is not a concern of US.

I’m willing to bet he has a Hamas passport, though.
