Ferchrissakes, I was required to take at least two years of a foreign language in high school, and I went to a backwater school in the armpit of Middle America. Granted, we only had the choice of French or Spanish, but it was still required.

I did the high school Spanish thing for 2 years (don’t recall if it was required or not). I was duly grateful that the language requirement for science/engineering Ph.Ds was gone by the time I was in grad school.
