I’m just learning as I think we all are, but wouldn’t these big tech companies be able to flesh out fake news sites, funky bot activities and all of this kind of use of their services.

Very discouraging. The Russians manipulated us like we are a bunch of amateurs; beat us with our own tools and tech.

It may not be all that surprising, though. If anyone knows how to manipulate already-brainwashed people, it’s Russian former KGB officers and the like. Our problem is how to teach people to recognize propaganda.
