district courts are trial courts. they’re quite important because the trial record sets the appellate record. I wasn’t aware that the central district needed 7 new judges (it may well, it covers Los Angeles, Riverside, Orange, Santa Barbara, Ventura, San Luis Obispo, and San Bernardino Counties)

I was called for jury duty there once. I was in San Bernardino County. I had to get up at 4 AM to catch the bus to downtown LA for the thing where you can asked to be excused. I was, for the heinous journey it involved. A couple weeks later, I got a $100 check in the mail to cover my expenses. I kicked myself for passing on a very interesting, slightly profitable adventure. Lots of bus time, though.
