I like to watch both car restoration and computer restoration shows, and I quickly realized that the latter are to geeks of my generation what the former were to our parents generations: Noisy, slow maintenance hogs that have little real use in the modern world besides as expensive toys. But we want them so badly because we’re blinded by nostalgia.

Yep. That’s why I dearly love emulators. I can get 99.999% of the experience without the hassles of dragging, for example, a PDP-11/93 into my house, fixing it’s power supply (which is always trashed) and then paying the enormous number of watts that sucker swallows. But simh running through a good a good terminal emulator? With BSD 2.11 on the simulator? There is nothing different in any real way. I have a Sun 4 emulator running SunOS 4.1.4 that I can keep on a USB stick. 3 ~ 4 gigabytes of storage can salve every moment of nostalgia I have ;)
