If you wanted to provoke a mutiny, you fucked with the British sailor’s rum ration, but they did have what they called “small beer”. Essentially a low-alcohol brew, often unfiltered, but it was used as drinking water since, unlike water, it didn’t become a toxic algal sludge after sitting in barrels for a couple of months.

I gave up beer. I gave up wine. I only drink whiskey. It’ll be the death of me. :D
