I was reading a book about Roman Britain and was surprised to find out that there’s a letter from Cicero from around Caesar’s incursion which says Brittania has “no great worth, except in slaves”.

Political intrigue, maybe? I’d be surprised if the Romans didn’t know what the Greeks knew (the argentiferous tin mines) for hundreds of years.
