If an American (with colonial ancestry) does genealogy and keeps an open mind, a lot of information about our past can be gathered just by reading records from the past couple of centuries.

I note that some Americans involved in genealogy, if you watch programs like WDYTYA, read into the past some ideology that they have been taught.

My belief is that the past isn’t so easily packaged.

Also, those of us who have searched for our colonial ancestors also discover how few people really were able to sign their own documents. We take literacy and education for granted today.

and people seem to want to be definitively typed as just one thing. i’m an x or a y, from specifically here or there. they want to have clearly been something. - no one wants to be a mutt.
