It is too early to say what the motives and all are. But it isn’t looking good. The current Chechen insurgency is led by a guy calling for world Jihad. Additionally, many Chechens are in places like Syria and Iraq as foreign fighters.

However, why they would stage their first attack outside Russia in the US is very puzzling. The west and the US Public mostly had sympathy for the Chechen cause for independence .

I think these guys acted alone for reasons of their own.
