Does not surprise me at all. I’ve seen rants about how these new immigrants are changing the nature of our society and will not integrate into our culture. Diversity terrifies these people; they are brown shirts marching behind Tucker Carlson and other monsters who are here to inflame a new civil war and silence those who disagree with the promotion of white supremacy.

That’s exactly what they said about my grandparents, and the other million or so Eastern European Jewish immigrants of their generation. They don’t speak English, their religion is different than ours, they’re driving down wages by working so cheap…

It was all true, of course.

The same for the million or so Italian Catholic immigrants of the same time span; they faced marginally less resistance in at least one category, because the Irish Catholics who’d been here for 50 years at least didn’t object to the Catholic part of their identity.
