I get to herd the two I have back into the apartment after exploration trips into the hallway. Though the one usually just wants to run a patrol loop to sniff doorways and comes back in on his own.

I think the real trick with mine is the send them out hungry. Then when it’s clear that a snack is in the works they are motivated to return home. Though with indoor/outdoor cats that might be an incentive for them to go hunting.

Our family cat way back when used to annoy my mother by complaining and carrying on until food was put in the dish. the cat would sniff the food to verify it was sound, and *then* go outside to hunt knowing that there was a supply on hand in case things did not work out successfully.
