They’d probably like Maverick…..Westerns are somewhat popular here, mostly because of the influence of Karl May and his Winnetou/Old Shatterhand novels (and later, films).

Germans seem amazed that we Americans do not know Karl May westerns. I only knew about them because our German teacher mentioned them.

But I pointed out that America’s romantic view of the West was shaped by Zane Gray, a dentist from Ohio, who, like Karl May, had never visited the American West until after he had written his novels about it, and was generally disappointed with what he experienced when he finally got there.

But at Christmas, my kids and I always watched Winnetou movies on German TV. Filmed in Yugoslavia.
