A friend of mine worked for years as an editor for a couple different journals. She was interviewing a candidate for a Junior Editor position, and the candidate admitted she wasn’t good at spelling.

When my friend asked how she expected to be an editor, she said she was good with Spellcheck.

My friend pointed out that Spellcheck will tell you if it’s A word. It won’t tell you if it’s THE word.

When I taught copywriting, I emphasized the importance of proofreading. Had a student who said that would not be a problem as he would have an assistant to do that. I laughed. Then, on a midterm group project, one of the groups did a campaign for tourism in Bermuda and spelled it Burmuda.
