I went to church with a Baptist family around the same era, 1969 or so, and the whole service was guilting people into marching up front to cry and confess and declare they wanted to get rid of their “black hearts” or whatever and accept Jesus. My 8-year old friend would whisper to me about hell. Fire roasting your skin for eternity, no water, etc….The air of emotional coercion and fear was intense- it was surreal, not unlike these Fellini-esque bits here.
Totally freaked me out and I came home really alarmed for everyone’s souls up until the point my Mom looked at me with a raised an eyebrow and I instantly “got” that it was all bullshit. Whew!
