Their views on immigration were not right enough for to energize their rabid base. Heck, the only thing I could ever support about GW Bush was his initiative for immigration reform, but his own party would not support him on it.

I really think you’re engaging in some serious revisionism especially with Romney. You’re right about Bush but I’m talking about specifically how Trump just didn’t come out of nowhere. He was just a louder voice of what’s been whispered. Look at what we’re seeing with Kavanaguh. A lot of the things that make him unfit for SCOTUS happened when he worked for Bush.
