So how was it that black slaves came to be imported to America? Because the white settlers weren’t willing to work that hard.

They could not get Native Americans to do the work, they would just run off and return to their people, so the white settlers, who found it easier to be cruel than to put in that sort of backbreaking work, just imported people who were not in a position to run away and threatened them with violence if they did not work without wages.
