I’ve been reading a lot about Nixon the last couple of weeks. He went behind Johnson’s back before the 1968 election, and directly intervened in the peace talks with the North Vietnamese, promising a better deal if they would hold off until after the election. Johnson knew he did it, and Nixon straight up lied to him on the phone about it. Johnson still did nothing about it because he didn’t want to be seen as interfering in an upcoming election. Sound familiar?
